For Chawlie and others.

My daughter Jen (#1 of 3) has almost completed her move to Bahrain. The house was sold, the furniture is "on the boat", and last Monday her four foundlings flew "pet first class", on KLM, from San Francisco to Amsterdam. They spent 24 hours in the KLM Pet Hotel, and then flew on to Bahrain. They were met by her spouse Scott, and now are in their new home in Manama.

Whitney (bigger dog) was brought home to the US after Scott spent a year in Kosovo (lucky dog). Reggie (small dog) was found rain soaked in a Sacramento seniors housing area - never claimed and never reported missing. Evette and Lucia, as kittens, arrived at my daughter's pet door about four years ago. No mother or siblings ever located. The pictures were taken "just out of the box". They are now much more settled a week later.

My daughter takes the same flights tomorrow.

She is going to love the KLM flight, even though the trip will be incredibly long. The best part of international travel is the time in the air. It's the airport time that is so stressful.

I have flown KLM in the past and always enjoyed it. This past trip for the holidays I flew Air France (now teamed with KLM) between Paris and Houston, and to/from Paris on the national airline of the country where I work. The Air France service was very nice: lots of movie choices, good wine, good food, etc. Going to Houston the aircraft was an older A340 with no USB or power, and my new noise cancelling earphones battery ran out. So on the way back to work, I carried on my old noise cancelling over-ear headphones that takes a AAA battery, and wouldn't you know, the aircraft was a new 777 that had USB so everything stayed charged. These flights are long enough to sleep, but airplane sleep only counts half as much as real sleep.

The only bad part is jet lag. The experts say it takes a day to get over every hour of time zone you change. I'm not quite over mine yet, but on a positive note, I was able to watch the last 2 NFL wild card games, and the first half of the Clemson-Alabama game, in the middle of the night and early morning hours without falling asleep. Goodness knows how jet lag will affect Jen's critters!

Do you Skype? I learned when my girl friend (now wife) left our sandbox for Manila and then Houston. Our Skype time is 5am here and 8pm there.

Hope she enjoys her time there. Just last night AFN TV had an ad for Arabic cooking classes at the base in Bahrain. (Armed Forces Network doesn't have commercials, just public service announcements and programming promotions.) There is always a lot of turmoil in the news about things over here, but the news is always sensationalized. As they say, there's no truth in the news, and no news in the truth. The real situation in this part of the world isn't sensational enough to make it to the news.

Chawlie, thank you for the information and kind words. We have been Skype users and will continue now even more so. Our time difference is PST plus 11 hours to Bahrain time.

BTW, my Sharky and her four critters have been best "buds" for years. Here's Sharky with Whitney and Lucia at our (their) last visit over Christmas. Notice they use the "throw" when sleeping on the sofa.

It's a beautiful thing. Only way it could be a better pitcha would be with Jen in it.
