I have failed to mention our trip to Metarie when we spent time in the Quarters. We stopped at Dorginac's to show my son a typical New Orleans gorcery store. He has never really been to one. He has been to the chains but not a local one (I don't consider Rouses a typical New Orleans grocery store). We were immediately drawn to the bakery counter. Man, that is nice. They have some great apple fritters and cannoloni (sp?). The turtles left a little bit to be desired. Y'all have been keeping it a secret from us on here.

Dorignac's is just a few blocks from my home and I visit there several times a week. The bakery is first rate and I love the St. Joseph bread and occasionally some cinnamon rolls or cheese cake. Chef Jezz puts out an array of take-away food for when I don't feel like cooking for myself. Pair that with Dorignac's Sommelier, Butch, and you have a winning combination. It's fun to be a regular Dorignac's customer and to know many of the employees on a first name basis. Junior's "office" is still a kitchen table in the restaurant/deli area where anyone is welcome to sit and chat. One of the few remaining neighborhood groceries, Dorignac's makes me feel at home.
Copcop, you are very lucky to have such a great store close to you. Believe me when you don't have anything near as nice as that close it is a pain. Have a fritter for me sometime.
I met Joey during my race track days. (early 70's?) Anyway he had an outstanding thoroughbred named Cangirod... Many times I would pass by the store and yes the Bakery and Deli has always been great!
BTW: Do you know how he came about naming the horse? That's an easy one... only 2 jelly donuts for a correct answer! aboy

After Katrina when I had to run to Jefferson for work I always made a trip to Dorignac's. We had no groceries so I would make a trip to get some really cool stuff. My wife loved some of the food that had made up already like corn and crab bisque. I miss not going on those runs. I might have to make a trip out there soon....

Do it, Bret! The soups are especially perfect! I had a corn and crab concoction yesterday that knocked my socks off! I ate the whole container all by my own self with a hunk of Dorignac's St. Joseph's bread! MMMMmmmm......good!
