Some of you know that after Hurricane Katrina's surge made its way into Lake Pontchartrain it washed away our camp on Hayne Blvd. (commonly known at "Little Woods") which had stood for 80 years. And that we found huge chunks of it a half mile away -- over the rock levee, over the railroad tracks, over the huge mud/grass levee, and across the four-lane highway.

Some of you know that I built a back porch on my home using the salvaged wood that was our camp and of how much pleasure it gives me to, once again, sit with family and friends on that porch. On the railing I hung the Camp-A-Nella sign which we also salvaged from the ruins.

I'm thrilled to say that our camp sign has a new home in the restored New Canal (West End) Lighthouse/museum which opens to the public on April 20th. Both were salvaged from the storms. And now neither will be forgotten. Knowing that thousands of New Orleanians have great memories of time spent at "the camps" I'm elated to think that a part of my family's camp is there as a reminder of life on Lake Pontchartrain as it existed for so long until the recent past.

That is wonderful. I have been waiting patiently for the lighthouse to reopen and we take a ride out there a few times a month to admire it. She never looked so good. Did you make a replica of the sign for the back porch? It won't be the same without it.

Here's a picture of the rear of Camp-anella. I couldn't find one of the sign.
