Does anyone know why it is named "the Casino"? I don't know, so I'm asking the people knowledgeable of New Orleans' history.

I remember going to City Park on my bike in the early '50's, and the Casino was the name, or at least, everyone called it that. My close friend's dad and grandfather owned the boat concession, housed in the back of the Casino. Many happy days spent there.

I was told as a child that The Casino was originally built in 1912 as a casino. The Casino opened in July 1913.

It never was a gambling casino. It was built in the Spanish Mission style and casino is a Spanish word for cafe (or something like that). It was built by the park but may have been renovated by the WPA during the 30s. I included it in my City Park book -- take a look at http://www.websitesneworleans.com/newor ... /id41.html

When is a casino not a casino? .........When it's in City Park.
Mr. Lake's post is corroborated by Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository:

The "Casino building", despite the name, for most its history has housed restaurants, cafes, and park offices in City Park, New Orleans.
