Disagreeable people, know it alls, people who post smut, people who seem to like the sound of their typing, people who think they're funny, people selling stuff - are just some of the reasons to block someone on a forum. Blocking a troll on Usenet was absolutely delightful. Maybe calling it the "blocked list" would appeal more than "foe list".

I'm not sure what having a "friend list" is good for. What does that feature do?

We have a "privacy list" feature on our office IM system that allows us to block out those that we find annoying. We have the option of either selecting individuals to block, or blocking most and selecting those who can see us. I love it. It doesn't tell anyone that they've been blocked, it just makes it so that they can't see who that you're online. I'm sure there are some who think I never log into IM.

As my "Sainted Mother" used to say, "If we all thought the same way, this would be a damned dull world". I'm still with her, I enjoy the different ideas. Some have caused me to re think certain attitudes.

From the forum FAQs:
You can use these lists to organise other members of the board. Members added to your friends list will be listed within your User Control Panel for quick access to see their online status and to send them private messages. Subject to template support, posts from these users may also be highlighted.

I'm not sure what all that's about since I seldom go to the User Control Panel (and I guess few people do). But, hey, it's a "feature" of the forums and everyone likes to have "features", don't they?

The only drawback to the foe blocking is that you must be logged in for it to work. if you check out the forum without logging in, it has no way to activate your preferences so no one is blocked.

The other drawback is that you cannot add administrators and moderators to your foes list. :P
