I use Command cord organizers for the same purpose. I had them on the side of my desk and hook the cords through so they don't slip down. Serves the same purpose, but doesn't scratch my desk.

I use those Command fasteners all over the house and am continually amazed at their strength. I currently have a 7" TV over my treadmill hooked to the wall with their velcro fasteners and it's holding just fine. I put two small hooks on the back of the door and stretched a small bungee cord between them to keep the ironing board from flopping when the door is opened and they have held for months and give no sign of letting go. I now have bags of them in various shapes and sizes to use whenever the need arises.
