In a way, I'm glad that no one has mentioned the election. Leaving politics out of the kitchen or dining room helps keep the peace.

Art's post, however, is a positive contribution to these forums, imho. Thanks!

I remember the day after the elections in Baghdad when all my local hires came back to work after the election holiday. When I asked any of them if they had voted, the answer was always a big smile and an ink-stained thumb (to prevent multiple voting they used indelible ink). When one of them started to say, "Yeah, I voted for..." I interrupted and said, "No, don't tell me. I'm just glad you voted."

Since I just happened to be in town until tomorrow, I am working from home and slipped out around 10:30 to vote. Our precinct was split after last election so the lines were shorter, and they had two tables set up A-L and M-Z. Mercifully, the M-Z line was short and I breezed through.

Oklahoma uses scanned paper ballots so there isn't any holdup of waiting for a voting machine to free up. No chance of hanging chads or partially completed little boxes as the machine verifies it when you stick it in it's little mouth, and then spits if out if something is illegible. Altogether it's a fairly civilized experience.

We had a choice of using a paper ballot that gets scanned or an electronic machine. I don't know if the scanner spits out an illegible ballot, but it took my very carefully completed one easily. PaulaRat opted for the machine, cleverly allowing me to return to the car to warm it up. We were at the polls for about 45 minutes, all but the last five--ten for PR--standing outside in clear, calm, sub-freezing, pre-dawn darkness. We weren't back together till about 10:20, after my rehearsal, and PR had readied a delicious homemade deep-dish pizza for delicious dining with the returns.
