Made my first trip of the year today. Remembering the recent cold snap, the lack of rain this winter, and noticing the very low level of the Mississippi River, I knew it wouldn't be good. But it was beyond bad. It was terrible. After two hours and 15 baby crawfish, it was time to call it quits. Maybe I'll try again in six weeks.

Not apropos to the Spillway but somewhat related -- we placed some live crawfish in our small pond in the country last weekend. The following day I found one that didn't survive and the remaining 9 others were unaccounted for. We made sure to place more females than males but I suspect we needed a larger "population" to begin with even though the pond is relatively small. It's all experimental and I feel bad about experimenting with live creatures but then I tell myself, "At least the ones in the pond have a chance to survive because they escaped the boiling pot".
