You're absolutely right. I have a good friend who was ready to throw a 3 year-old, high-powered laptop in the garbage because it ran so slow. I finally got him to give it to me for a weekend and I cleaned all the crap off of it, found and deleted a logging program that was growing by leaps and bounds and chewing up memory, and generally made it fly again. He was amazed and his wife was eternally grateful that now he wouldn't have to run out and buy another expensive one that would eventually get the same problems. I do perform backups, defrag and clean mine out regularly, but I don't take my laptops apart to perform physical maintenance.

Takes about a minute -- on any tower (turned off) take a Swifter and wipe all the vent and fan areas. The fan areas are usually the worst, as they are typically sucking air in, but the Swifter cleans them right off.

Opening one side of the tower (2 thumb screws), using a "miniature" vaccuum attachment set, very carefully, once a year.

Many towers have software which varys the fan speed. If you hear your fan(s) often speeding up, think -- time for a cleaning.

I don't even know how to take my laptop apart much less to clean it! It's almost a bunch of years old. Will you help me with it, Mr. Lake?

Sure. Give me a heads up about when you can come by and we'll take care of it.

Good deal. I'll bring some refreshments.
